Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
