Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
